Most AI cartoon examples online show only the finished image. That makes it hard to judge what the tool actually does with a photo: what it keeps, what it changes and what it quietly invents. This post puts the original photos next to the results, so you can see the difference for yourself.
One portrait, three styles
The same woman, the same outfit, run through three different style prompts. The clothes, hair and earrings stay consistent. What changes is the face, and that is where style choice matters most.

Illustration. Closest to a painted portrait. Proportions stay realistic.

Animated. Larger eyes and a broader smile. Friendlier, less like the original.

Cartoon. The simplest shapes. Reads well at small sizes, such as a profile picture.
Before and after
1. Full figure in front of a wardrobe

A full-length photo with a busy background. The outfit carries over almost item by item: white shirt, jeans, brown jacket, necklace. The rack behind her is simplified but still recognisable, which keeps the image grounded in a real place.
2. Portrait in an anime style

The braids, the lace collar and the patterned skirt all survive. The eyes do not stay the same: anime styles enlarge them and may change their colour. If keeping the original eye colour matters, say so in the prompt.
3. A busy outdoor scene

Tents, a fire pit, layered necklaces and a patterned shirt. Even with this much going on, the main elements are kept and arranged in a similar way. Small details in the background are the first thing to be merged or dropped.
4. Movement and low light

A candid party photo with movement and dim light, the kind of picture people usually assume will not work. Here the result is clean and readable, because the person is still clearly separated from the background. The pose and mood carry over; the exact face is less faithful than in a well-lit portrait.
5. A cat on a bed

Pets are often easier than people. The colour and striping of the coat carry over, along with the green eyes. The style softens the fur and makes the expression a little more content than in the photo.
6. A puppy outdoors

The tri-colour coat and the white stripe down the face are what make this puppy recognisable, and both are kept. The grass and small flowers become a brighter, more painterly meadow.
What these examples show
- Clothing and colour carry over best. Outfits, patterns and accessories are usually kept almost exactly.
- Backgrounds are simplified, not removed. Large elements stay; small details merge or disappear.
- Faces change the most. This is where one style differs from another, so choose the style for how much likeness you want to keep.
- A clear subject matters more than a perfect photo. Even a dim, moving shot can work if the person stands out from the background.
- Distinct markings make pets recognisable. A face stripe or strong colour pattern does more than image sharpness.
